The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
